New Delhi: When Prime Minister Narendra Modi was presented with the ‘Key to the City’ of Abuja, the capital city of the Federal Republic of Nigeria upon his arrival in the African nation, it could be the reason for the curiosity of many.  

Although when India’s popular Prime Minister receives state honors and awards, it generally makes headlines, but this small gesture didn’t come to the limelight.

The act holds significant meaning for the ties between the two nations and symbolizes the nature of diplomacy India is doing with the ideology of ‘Vasudev Kutumbhakam’—the world is one family.

If you as a person hand over keys of your house to a guest, it means that the guest is highly trustworthy and respected. The act by Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, Minister for Federal Capital Territory conveyed the same meaning.

The symbolic gesture signifies the deep trust and honor the people of Nigeria bestow upon India and its commitment to other nations for a greater cause.

This ceremonial tradition reflected Nigeria’s trust and respect towards India. By presenting the key, the city acknowledges the importance of fostering goodwill, appreciation, and most importantly trust upon India and PM Modi. 

The Prime Minister is scheduled to hold bilateral discussions in Nigeria to strengthen the ties between both countries.In a post on X, PM Modi emphasised the aim of his visit to deepen the bilateral friendship between both nations.

“Landed a short while ago in Nigeria. Grateful for the warm welcome. May this visit deepen the bilateral friendship between our nations,” PM Modi said.

President of Nigeria Bola Ahmed Tinubu also highlighted strengthening the bilateral ties as he expressed his anticipation of welcoming PM Modi to Nigeria.
