Imphal: As violent ethnic conflict in Manipur refused to die down, the National People’s Party (NPP), a key ally of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP ), announced withdrawal of support to the state. In a major setback for the govt led by Chief Minister N Biren Sigh, the NPP-led by Conrad Sangma has blamed him for failing to control the violence in Manipur.

This could mean a significant shift in the political landscape of the violence-hit state as NPP holds seven seats in the 60-member House. However, this development is unlikely to destabilize the government given BJP’s clear majority with 32 seats.

Earlier in August 2023, Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA) which has 2 seats in the legislative assembly, withdrew its support to Biren Singh government.

Additionally, the BJP also has support of six MLAs from JD(U), and five MLAs from the Naga People’s Front (NPF) alongside three independent MLAs. This ensures the BJP’s control over the govt despite cracks being appearing within the coalition.

This recent political development follows the recovery of bodies of six people, including two children, who were allegedly taken hostage by members of Kuki community last week. The incident triggered  a violent protest by Metei Community demanding action against the culprit. Th angry mob also vandalised the houses of several MLAs in the wake of the recent deaths.

The north-eastern state has been reeling under ethnic strife between Kuki and Meitei communities since May 3, 2023.

Meanwhile, a total curfew has been imposed in Imphal until further notice after the state witnessed fresh episodes of violence in the Jiribham district.
