A series win over Australia in Australia is still a monumental ask in the cricket world, and only few have managed to carve out success in the white jersey Down Under. Team India on the other hand has attained the unthinkable feat not once but twice, that too consecutively. To hunt for the hat-trick the team has landed in Australia and will vie to defend the Border-Gavaskar Trophy starting November 22.
Can Rohit-Gambhir Emulate Kohli-Shastri? Michael Vaughan Asks
Team India ended Australia’s home reign in the 2018-19 Border Gavaskar Trophy and two years later pummeled the Aussies again at their backyard, with a famous series-clinching win at Gabba. On both occasions, head coach Ravi Shastri was a constant with India and while Virat Kohli left the tour after 1st Test in 2020/21, he was the first-choice captain both times.
Highlighting the energy that Shastri-Kohli infused in the team during their tenure as coach and captain, former England captain Michael Vaughan has casted doubts whether Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma would be able to emulate the success that their predecessors were able to garner.
“The last two times they’ve come here, they’ve won, and they’ve had a charismatic coach (in Ravi). They’ve had a captain in Virat Kohli. I’m a big believer (that) when you play Australia, there’s only one way to play them (and) that’s being on the front foot, being aggressive and trying to ruffle a few feathers,” Vaughan said at a promotional event on Tuesday.
“Ravi could do it. Virat could do it. I want to know in this Indian camp, who’s the Ravi Shastri? I don’t think there can be another one, but who’s going to be the Virat Kohli?” he added.

Following the crushing loss at home to New Zealand, the pressure is on Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma to dispel the doubts with a one-of-a-kind performance in the upcoming Border Gavaskar Trophy. Will they be able to shut the naysayers and take India to yet another memorable victory in Australia? All to look forward to. The Australia vs India first Test will begin on November 22, 2024.
