India chooses to bat first, hence at lunch on Day 1 of the first Test between India and Australia it finds itself battling at 51 for 4. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, who each got two wickets, presented furious bowling that left the Indian batting line reeling. Early fellers were Yashasvi Jaiswal, Devdutt Padikkal, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul; Rahul alone made a noteworthy contribution with 26 runs. Looking to steady the innings as India negotiates a difficult scenario, Rishabh Pant (10*) and Dhruv Jurel (4*) continue at the bat as of 25 overs.

Starc and Hazlewood Achieve 400 Test Wickets as New-Ball Pair

On Day 1 of the inaugural Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at Perth Stadium, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood created history as the first Australian new-ball duo to accumulate 400 Test wickets. Early on against India’s top order, the pair attacked with Starc dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck in the third over. Hazlewood then followed suit, eliminating rookie Devdutt Padikkal for a duck off 23 balls, therefore putting India in a dangerous starting point for the game.

Originally making his Test debut in 2011, Starc has captured 358 wickets at an average of 27.74. Among fast bowlers, he is Australia’s fourth best wicket-taker in Tests; Glenn McGrath comes second. Starting his Test debut in 2014, Hazlewood has captured 273 wickets in 70 matches at an average of 24.82. They have formed a strong pace attack in their 54 Test matches together, often playing with skipper Pat Cummins. Proving their ability in high-stakes events, these three proved crucial for Australia’s triumph against India in the 2023 World Test Championship final.
