In-form Aussie Stumper ‘Firmly In The Mix’ For Debut In BGT Series, Says AUS Selector George Bailey

After Team India revealed the travelling unit for the upcoming Australia tour for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, the onus is on the Aussies to form a solid squad to counter India as they travel down under to defend their title. The Men in Blue features notable debutants who will travel with the side and have been in impeccable form, and to counter the young guns, the Aussies could field their young stars from the pool of emerging talent. CA’s Chief selector, George Bailey, doesn’t rule out the notion and also had one player in mind.

George Bailey Doesn’t Rules Out Fielding A Debutant Against India At BGT Series

While speaking to the reporters, Cricket Australia’s Chief Selector George Bailey revealed that wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis has been kept in the mix to make his red-ball debut for his side during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against India. Inglis has been in red-hot form, and he could benefit the Aussies as a specialist batter in the critically acclaimed Test series since they already have Alex Carey for the wicketkeeper role.

“There’s no doubt that the form is really fantastic at the moment… the ability to jump back into domestic cricket and dominate has been fantastic. I think in different series at different times of the year, he would firmly come into the mix purely as a batter the way he’s been going.

“If the right opportunity opened up throughout the summer, in the spots where we think he’s most capable of performing, I think he’d be firmly in that conversation as well,” George Bailey said.

Josh Inglis has been a solid prospect when he lit up the Sheffield Shield matches after he scored four tons. Cricket Australia could reap a lot of benefits in the opening spot as the spot alongside Usman Khawaja remains vacant. Steve Smith’s promotion did not really work out the way they thought. However, The chief selector has ruled out Inglis for the opener’s role.

“I’ve spoken to Josh on this. Not in the short term, I don’t think that he’s someone that we would be looking to place at the top of the order,” George Bailey said.
