Maharashtra Cabinet Portfolios: CM Fadnavis Keeps Home, Energy; Shinde Gets Urban Development

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Cabinet portfolios were allocated, on Saturday, over two weeks after the formation of the newly-elected Mahayuti government 2.0 in the state under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis . CM Fadnavis decided to keep the crucial Home department along with the Energy, Law & Judiciary and General Administration with him, while assigning Urban Development, Housing and Public Works to Deputy CM Eknath Shinde . He also allocated other key responsibilities among his council of ministers.

Portfolios Held By CM Devendra Fadnavis

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis will handle multiple important departments, including the Home department, the Energy, Law and Judiciary, General Administration, and Information and Publicity departments. Apart from these departments, he will handle other portfolios, which is not assigned to any of the ministers.

Fadnavis’ decision to keep key portfolios with him highlighted his strategic allocation focusing on key governance areas.

Deputy CM’s Significant Roles

In the Mahayuti government 2.0, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has been given charge of Urban Development, Housing, and Public Works (Public Enterprises), while the other Deputy CM Ajit Pawar will oversee Finance and Planning as well as State Excise.

The fresh allocation of work marks a continuation of their previous roles in the previous Eknath Shinde-led government in Maharashtra.

Focus On Home Department

Before the allocation of the portfolios, there was a suspense over distribution of the Home Department. Reports suggested that there were high expectations within the Shiv Sena that the Home department would be allocated to their party, but BJP sources indicated that the saffron party would hold on to this critical portfolio.

Notably, the BJP won 132 seats in the recently concluded Maharashtra Assembly elections on November 20, while the Shiv Sena and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP secured 57 and 41 seats respectively.

Winter Session And Cabinet Swearing-In

The portfolios were allocated after the conclusion of the state Legislature’s winter session. A total of 39 ministers were sworn in on December 15, with Fadnavis and his two deputies having taken the oath of office on December 5.

The Mahayuti alliance, consisting of the BJP, NCP, and Shiv Sena, secured a strong mandate in the assembly elections, winning 230 out of 288 seats. This robust alliance now faces the task of fulfilling its promises through these newly appointed ministers.
