Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has cast a cloud of uncertainty over his participation in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, citing personal reasons. The first Test is scheduled to take place in Perth on November 22.

Rohit Sharma not sure of going to Australia due to personal reasons

In a stunning revelation, Rohit Sharma admitted that he is unsure if he will be able to join the team in Australia, saying “Not sure whether I will be going, fingers crossed.” This bombshell comes on the heels of India’s disappointing 0-3 loss to New Zealand at home.

If Rohit Sharma is unable to participate, vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah will lead the team in the series opener, with Abhimanyu Easwaran likely to be his cover as an opener. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy has taken on added significance, as both teams are vying to reach the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) once again. Australia defeated India in the final of the previous cycle of the World Test Championship held in England. 

Now for India, the equation has become far tougher as they will have to win at least four out of five Test matches against Australia to reach the WTC final. Australia has already dethroned India to take the top spot in the WTC points table after New Zealand’s win in the third Test match.

India whitewashed in a Test series for the first time in 91 years

As far as the Test series against New Zealand is concerned, India lost the contest 3-0. This is the first time India have been whitewashed in a home Test series of three or more games. 

“Something like this will be a very low point of my career and I take full responsibility for it,” Rohit Sharma said at the post-match press conference.

“Yes absolutely (bitter pill to swallow). Losing a series, a Test match, is never easy… something that is not easily digestible. We didn’t play our best cricket. New Zealand played better throughout the series. There were a lot of mistakes we did,” Rohit said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“The first two Tests we did not put enough runs in the first innings. This game we got the 30 runs (28) lead and the target was chaseable. 

“We failed as a unit. When you are chasing a target like that, you want runs on the board. That was in my mind and it did not come of. When it does not come off it does not look great,” he added.
