Bengaluru: A private nursing college in Bengaluru has sparked controversy after it reportedly asked students from Jammu and Kashmir to trim their beards. The incident came to light when these students, practicing nursing were told to shave, leading to complaints of discrimination.

The students had written a letter to the Jammu and Kashmir Association, urging college authorities not to make beard-trimming mandatory. They said the college, affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, had instructed students to maintain personal hygiene, especially during clinical sessions, as per the letter’s details. The letter also highlighted that students were marked absent if they attended clinical activities without shaving, which negatively impacted their academic records.

College Dines Allegations

According to college, all students—regardless of background, including local Kannadigas—are expected to maintain a specific dress code and grooming standards.

Vijayakumar, a clinical inspector, had previously warned students about untidy appearances, such as long hair or beards, emphasizing hygiene as a key requirement for those on clinical duties. Despite the warning, the college claims some students repeatedly ignored these instructions.

In response to the backlash, the college held a meeting with students and staff, urging everyone to adhere to the institution’s regulations without giving in to external pressures. The college management insists it was simply enforcing protocol, adding they are disheartened by the political angle the incident has taken.

After the discussions, the college says the issue has now been resolved.
