Kolkata: BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal, Shivendu Adhikari, has alleged that the Mamata Banerjee -led West Bengal Police are making attempts to influence the voting process in the ongoing by-poll elections and BJP workers are being put under house arrest.

Adhikari claimed that a local BJP politician in Midnapore district, Nayan Dey, had been placed under house arrest and hindering BJP workers from participating in the electoral process.

“Mamata Police are adopting desperate measures to influence the voting process to give the TMC Party an upper hand. Nayan Dey, an important BJP Karyakarta of Chandra GP, Midnapore Sadar Block, is not being allowed to step outside his house. His house is under constant police surveillance. Such ‘house arrests’ are being made to prevent @BJP4Bengal Karyakartas from participating in the electoral process. How low will TMC & Mamata Police stoop?” Adhikari posted on X.

The by-elections will be held in six assembly constituencies: Sitai (SC), Madarihat (ST), Naihati, Haroa, Medinipur, and Taldangra.

These by-elections were necessitated by the resignations of MLAs who were elected to the Lok Sabha in the general elections earlier this year.

A total of 108 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been deployed to ensure the smooth conduct of the elections.
