Chennai: A government doctor at Chennai’s Kalaignar Centenary Super Speciality Hospital (KCSSH) was stabbed multiple times by a patient’s family member on Wednesday morning. The incident, which took place in the outpatient department (OPD), has raised concerns over hospital security and led to demands for stricter protections for medical professionals.

Dr. Balaji Jagannath, a medical oncologist and heart patient, sustained injuries to his upper chest, neck, ear, and scalp during the attack. He was rushed to the ICU in critical condition, and is currently undergoing emergency surgery, though hospital sources report his condition has stabilized.

According to police, the attacker, identified as Vignesh from Perungalathur, posed as a hospital employee to enter the Oncology Department. He held an outpatient entry pass and was accompanied by three others. The attack reportedly stemmed from frustration over the treatment given to Vignesh’s mother, Prema, a cancer patient who had been receiving care at KCSSH since May. The group accused Dr. Jagannath of negligence, holding him responsible for her worsening condition.

Witnesses stated that Vignesh approached Dr. Jagannath around 10:15 am and, following a heated argument, took out a concealed kitchen knife, stabbing the doctor in the neck and upper body. As onlookers rushed to the doctor’s aid, Vignesh attempted to escape but was quickly apprehended by hospital staff and handed over to the Guindy police. Four others have also been detained for questioning.

Hospital security has come under scrutiny after the incident, with Health Minister Ma Subramanian asserting there was no security lapse, as private guards patrol inside the facility while police secure the perimeter. The State government, however, has ordered an inquiry into the matter.

Chief Minister MK Stalin addressed the incident on social media, describing it as “shocking” and confirming the suspect’s arrest. He stated, “I have ordered to give necessary treatment to the doctor and to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident.” He commended the selfless service of government doctors and emphasized the need to ensure their safety, promising that the government would take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Dr. L. Parthasarathy, Director of KCSSH, reported that Dr. Jagannath suffered multiple injuries to the scalp, head, neck, and ear, and the medical team is assessing the full extent of his injuries.

The Service and PG Doctors Association condemned the assault, demanding stringent action against the attacker. In response, doctors at KCSSH held a flash strike, suspending all non-emergency services in protest and seeking improved security measures for medical staff.
