It was the year 2003 when Team India ended the 23-year-long drought of going winless against Australia in the Down Under edition of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Rahul Dravid played an instrumental role in the 4-wicket victory at the Adelaide Oval. Fifteen years later in 2018/19 BGT, Chetashwar Pujara took on the Rahul Dravid role and steered India to a historic 2-1 series win over the Aussies in their backyard. Pujara repeated the heroics in the 2020/21 tour as well. However, as the 5-test affair against Australia is about to commence, Team India is left with a pressing query regarding who could hold on like Dravid and Pujara did in the past.

Rahul Dravid States what’s Paramount For Team India

Rahul Dravid, who has been there and done that, has come up with the solution and it is not at all sophisticated. According to the former India head coach, the onus will fall on to the current top-4. If the top-4 contributes a valuable hand then India could assert their authority over Australia in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Rahul Dravid said, “in Australia, runs at the top will be important. If your top 4 soak the initial period, it allows you to dominate games. It’s not about missing me or Pujara, they just need runs from the top order”. Dravid told EspnCricinfo.

What’s At Stake?

After enduring a humiliating 0-3 whitewash against New Zealand at home, the precious WTC final slot has seemingly slipped from Team India’s hands. Yet, the spot is still in the sights but to acquire that, Team India would have to pull off an unprecedented victory. To sail through the WTC Final, India would have to beat Australia in Australia by a margin of 4-0 at least. It has never happened before, but Team India has summoned miracles against Australia in their backyard before and would not be counting out the chances to attain something extraordinary again.
