IND vs NZ 3rd Test: Rohit Sharma and Co. have been defeated by New Zealand in Mumbai. The loss by 25 runs at the iconic Wankhede also marks India’s first ever clean sweep at home in a three-match Test series. The problem here is that India have been dethroned as the top team of the ongoing World Test Championship cycle. The failure of the Indian top order to play spin has hampered India’s chances of qualifying easily for the WTC finals. But more than India’s loss, it is Rishabh Pant ‘s dismissal that is being hugely debated.

Rohit Sharma Gives An Earful To Match Officials

After heavyweights such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill departed, it was only Rishabh Pant who was standing in New Zealand’s way to inflict a heartbreak on India. Pant at one point in time threatened to take the match away from the Kiwis. The Delhi Capitals skipper scored 64 runs off 57 deliveries. Pant stepped out to defend a turning delivery from Ajaz Patel which he believed deflected off his pads and landed in Tom Blundell’s hands.

The on-field umpire felt that Pant was not out, but the Kiwis were confident and used their only remaining DRS. After the decision was referred, the 3rd umpire felt that the ball had deflected off Pant’s bat and gave him out. The decision left Pant dejected who nodded in disagreement and walked back to the dressing room.

After the match, Rohit Sharma was particularly asked about Rishabh Pant’s dismissal and he had a very blunt reaction to it. ‘What I know if there is no conclusive evidence, third umpire can’t overturn it. It was an unfortunate dismissal. What we want is consistency from umpires. At one point, it felt like Rishabh will see us through‘, said Sharma

India now take on Australia next in the five-Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy. After a 3-0 loss to New Zealand, India need to win 4 Test matches against Australia in Australia. This will be a herculean task for the Indian team, but they can only blame themselves for it.
